Building on the core technology of our TW5 thin-line subwoofers, the TW3’s deliver a powerful combination of shallow mounting depth and excursion capability. In fact, they are capable of greater excursion than the W3v3’s. To allow this remarkable feat to be achieved, JL Audio’s patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the TW3’s using a “concentric tube” structure built into the injection-moulded cone body. This structure supports the voice coil and a full annular spider, while permitting the placement of the large motor structure further forward in the speaker than with conventional designs. TW3’s are optimized for small enclosures and offer our tab-ear mounting design to maximize cone area within their mounting footprints. This, combined with a special cast alloy frame design, makes the 12TW1 capable of operating in extremely tight spaces. These include under-seat installations in trucks, 2-seat sports cars and many other creative applications requiring a compact, low profile subwoofer design. JL Audio’s patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the 12TW1 using a “concentric tube” structure built into the injection-moulded cone body. This structure supports the voice coil and a full annular spider, while permitting the placement of a large motor structure further forward in the speaker than with conventional designs. The 12TW1 also features a clever frame design that minimizes the frontal clearance required for the excursion of the driver. This is accomplished by recessing the suspension attachment surface, so that most of the forward excursion occurs within the frame’s dimensions. Thanks to this feature, the 12TW1 requires only 0.87 inches (22 mm) of frontal clearance, even with its grille installed. This allows for more efficient use of space and increased enclosure volume within a given overall depth. Even though the 12TW1 is optimized for an enclosure much smaller than any other JL Audio twelve-inch Subwoofer, it never sounds like a big woofer struggling in a tiny box… Instead, it delivers all the rich, deep, controlled bass you have come to expect from a JL Audio subwoofer system. By combining direct power conversion with an ultra-high current output section, DCDT amplifiers are free of conventional switching power supplies, enabling them to generate remarkable power with unprecedented efficiency. Key to the enclosure’s performance is its efficient slot-ported design and precise tuning of its 12TW1 Subwoofer. Extensive interior bracing permits the use of thinner wall material that maximizes the enclosure’s internal volume relative to its exterior volume. The port wraps around two walls of the enclosure to produce the necessary low tuning frequency that ensures excellent extension and response smoothness. The flared port entry and exit further enhance sound quality by minimizing air-flow noises through the port. Integration to OEM and aftermarket head units is a snap thanks to a variety of input options and automatic turn-on capability (via signal sensing or DC offset sensing). Also included is a variable frequency low-pass filter (50-200 Hz), along with output polarity control switch. A quick-disconnect power connector makes it easy to remove the subwoofer when you need the extra space. As with all MicroSubT systems, these amplified versions produce the kind of output and extension normally associated with much larger systems.
